The Alabama YMCA Collegiate Legislature offers an opportunity for students at any of Alabama's
four-year institutions of higher learning to participate in a model legislative session, with
rules and procedures closely patterned after those of the Alabama Legislature.
Developing ethical and moral leaders for the future
First conceived in 1995, by Emily Hawk and Michael Musselwhite, the program allows participating
students the opportunity to draft, present and debate bills relating to issues of their choosing,
ideally those relevant to current issues.
In addition to the legislative session, workshops are also held on leadership, lobbying, and ethics.
This hands-on learning experience provides college students with a better understanding of the
legislative process in Alabama, and the elements necessary for effecting positive change through
legislative procedure.
Conducted with the guidance of the YMCA Youth in Government staff, the Alabama YMCA Collegiate
Legislature is sponsored by the Alabama Student Association.
The first sessions of Collegiate Legislature featured only a unicameral body, but the popularity
of the concept has resulted in the current establishment of a full, bicameral model legislature.
Last year over 200 college students participated.
